Rhetorical Analysis Of Cesar Chavez s Article - 1915 Words
Itââ¬â¢s hard to imagine that just ten short months ago I was sitting in a classroom building a spaghetti tower with no idea what a rhetorical analysis essay was or what the word anaphora meant. Now, just a couple of months later, I have read and analyzed six different novels, learned to write an argument, synthesis, and rhetorical analysis essay, expanded my lexicon of literary terms, and sat through a three hour AP exam. This class has not only given me the skills to master the AP exam, but it has also given me knowledge to succeed in future English courses and in life. Through this course, I have experienced unparalleled growth in my reading comprehension and writing abilities. Over the summer, we were asked to write a rhetorical analysis essay. I vividly remember reading the prompt and having no idea what to do. At the time, I had only a limited understanding of the words ethos, pathos, and logos, but somehow I managed to write a three page essay on the rhetoric of Cesar Chave zââ¬â¢s article. When we got back from summer vacation, we learned more about how to write a rhetorical analysis. We learned about SOAPStone, which stands for speaker, occasion, audience, purpose, subject, and tone. I applied my knowledge of SOAPStone to analyzing ââ¬Å"Two Ways of Seeing a Riverâ⬠and ââ¬Å"To My Old Masterâ⬠. Through SOAPStone, I was able to easily develop an introduction to my rhetorical analysis essays. Next up was learning how to identify rhetorical devices. Through reading Robert F. Kennedyââ¬â¢s

Air Pollution Is Their a Solution Essay - 1794 Words
Air Pollution Is Their Solution By Theresa Yeannakis SCI/275 Andra Johnson Sunday, April 18, 2010 When did we first experience air pollutions? Could it have been in the A.D era when cave people built small fires to survive? Or has it become an issue since the early 80`s. No one will be able to specifically say but what we can attest to is that since the A.D era we have contributed several times over to Air Pollution. We risk breathing in dangerous chemicals every time we breathe. What is air pollution? It is defined as all contaminants found in the atmosphere and can came in the form of a gas or particle. It also is found indoors as well as outdoors. Pollutants can get trapped inside buildings causing indoor pollutants to becomeâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦An ecosystem is a habitat that consists of living and non-living parts which interacts to form a stable living environment. Air pollutants can kill plants and trees by destroying their leaves. Animals also can die from air pollutants especially fish that live in highly polluted rivers. More and more carbon dioxide is being re leases into the air with the burning of the rain forest. Trees inhale 9,400 liters of carbon dioxide and that produces 12 kilograms of carbohydrate. This process frees the liter of oxygen. This regenerated air is sufficient for the respiration of 2 to 3 people (Breuer 1).We recognized this process not all producing the same amount of oxygen. Sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides causes derect damage to leaves of crop plants and trees when they enter the pores of the leaves. Air pollution is an ecological problem having to do with toxins in the air. If pollution continues as bad as it is the ozone layer will eventually become depleted and allow ultra violet rays in the Earth. This will continue to cause things like skin cancer, global warming and other problems. The ozone layer protects our planet from harmful ultraviolet radiation and ozone depletion is believed to contribute to high rates of skin cancer in countries like Australia. The Montreal Protocol in 1987 which restricts the m an-made pollutants such as CFCs would lead to an ozone recovery by the year 2050. Tuesday, February 15, 2000 Essay Example For Students
Tuesday, February 15, 2000 Essay Focus on Ethics Can Curb Cheating, Colleges FindBehavior: Academic dishonesty is rampant, but students will respond to higher standards of integrity, a study shows. By KENNETH R. WEISS, Times Education WriterCopyright 2000 Los Angeles TimesDAVIS, Calif.Grappling for ways to halt the spread of plagiarism and other cheating in college, professors often get stuck on the idea that its too late to change students behavior by the time they reach college. But a growing number of campuses, backed by new research, are out to prove otherwise. Student behavior is affected by the communities we build, said Gary Pavela, the University of Marylands director of judicial programs and student ethical conduct. Students cheat in high school in part because the think everyone else does. But students can change their ways if colleges clearly demand honesty, engage students in ethical issues and put them in charge of enforcement, said Pavela and his colleagues at such schools as UC Davis and Kansas State University, which are in the vanguard of a new movement to change the academic culture. A new large-scale study suggests they may be right. Although a startling 68% of college students admitted in an anonymous survey last fall that they engaged in some form of serious cheating, self-reported cheating was 10 percentage points lower on campuses that simply make a big fuss about academic integrity. The rates dipped even lower at colleges with formal honor codes. The survey results, which are to be released this week, are the first indication that anti-cheating campaigns are making inroads at the large public universities where many professors fear a spreading epidemic of academic dishonesty. The results directly challenge the broad view that a kids ethical views at age 17 or 18 are set by their parents for good or ill, Pavela said. Administrators and student leaders have cribbed ideas from smaller colleges with traditional honor codes and modified them to work on large campuses. At UC Davis, the topic of academic integrity is everywhere, brought up by the students themselves. As final exams approach each term, students give their peers free cards stamped, Honesty is the only policy, and free No. 2 pencils with the inscription: Fill in your own bubble or be in trouble. Older students do skits to show incoming freshmen what can happen if they violate the code of academic conduct. Professors and their teaching assistants regularly turn in undergraduates for the smallest of infractions. In case students somehow miss the point, every Wednesday the campus newspapers judicial report reveals all the embarrassing detailsexcept for namesof what one sophomore calls a parade of unbelievably stupid acts of plagiarism, improper collaboration and wandering eyes. All this attention on cheating seems to make a difference. I would never want to cheat hereits just too scary, said Tina Valenzuela, a UC Davis senior who wants to go to veterinary school. Just the fact that if you get caught, youd read about it in the paper. At UC Davis, only 31% of students reported that they got the questions or answers from someone else who had already taken a test before they didone of the most common forms of cheating. By comparison, on campuses that place less emphasis on academic integrity or ignore the issue altogether, 54% of students reported getting questions or answers. A skeptic might ask if students at schools with honor codes are simply less likely to admiteven anonymouslythat they have violated the rules. Donald L. McCabe, the Rutgers University management professor who conducted the newest study, part of a decade of research on the subject of cheating, thinks not. .uc44664ca757ab6f2a7fc8ad985096bdb , .uc44664ca757ab6f2a7fc8ad985096bdb .postImageUrl , .uc44664ca757ab6f2a7fc8ad985096bdb .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uc44664ca757ab6f2a7fc8ad985096bdb , .uc44664ca757ab6f2a7fc8ad985096bdb:hover , .uc44664ca757ab6f2a7fc8ad985096bdb:visited , .uc44664ca757ab6f2a7fc8ad985096bdb:active { border:0!important; } .uc44664ca757ab6f2a7fc8ad985096bdb .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uc44664ca757ab6f2a7fc8ad985096bdb { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uc44664ca757ab6f2a7fc8ad985096bdb:active , .uc44664ca757ab6f2a7fc8ad985096bdb:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uc44664ca757ab6f2a7fc8ad985096bdb .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uc44664ca757ab6f2a7fc8ad985096bdb .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uc44664ca757ab6f2a7fc8ad985096bdb .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uc44664ca757ab6f2a7fc8ad985096bdb .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uc44664ca757ab6f2a7fc8ad985096bdb:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uc44664ca757ab6f2a7fc8ad985096bdb .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uc44664ca757ab6f2a7fc8ad985096bdb .uc44664ca757ab6f2a7fc8ad985096bdb-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uc44664ca757ab6f2a7fc8ad985096bdb:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Steam Engines EssayLower cheating rates at honor code schools are validated by surveys of faculty and by students who have attended both kinds of institutions, McCabe said. Chapter 15 essays
Chapter 15 essays One in four Americans are infected with an STD. 57% of teenagers will lose theyre virginity in High School. 79% lost theyre virginity by the end of college. 16.9 is the average age for sex. 33% of high school students had sex once a month to twice a week and 52% of college students have sex twice a month to twice a week. This isnt even referring to adults. My text book is telling me the sexual revolution is over? This Sunday I woke up around 11am. I pour myself a cup of Joe and walk down my driveway barefoot, hair in shambles rubbing my groggy somewhat hung over eyes to collect the Sunday paper. I pull it out and what do I see right smack in the middle of the front page? About 4,000 naked people were lying down in the middle of Cleveland. This was enough to make me stop in the middle of my driveway in amazement. How could they print this on the front page of the Plain Dealer on a Sunday in color? The paper said it had something to do with art. It was for a photographer by the name of Spencer Tunick. I thought to myself yea right buddy 4,000 people dropped theyre pants and laid down with each other for the sake of a good picture, for art. Just days before this I received an anonymous letter in the mail inviting me to an orgy. An Orgy! What time period is this, ancient Rome? I thought to myself are people not aware of STDs, AIDS, teenage pregnancy? How could they not be? These issues are touched upon once in awhile enough to make you aware that they are out there but not enough to make you aware of how common they are. There is something else that swathe my senses when I am listening to the radio, reading a billboard, watching TV and reading magazines. Its what sells, its what makes you turn your head its what makes you nervous and stirs up feelings of love, lust and romance. Its sex. Sex is everywhere. Benefits of Reading Aloud
Benefits of Reading Aloud Readingà hasnt always been a silent activity andà the experience of reading aloud can be enjoyed by people at any age. Back in the fourth century, tongues started wagging when Augustine of Hippo walked in on Ambrose, the bishop of Milan, and found him . . . reading to himself: When he read, his eyes scanned the page and his heart sought out the meaning, but his voice was silent and his tongue was still. Anyone could approach him freely and guests were not commonly announced, so that often, when we came to visit him, we found him reading like this in silence, for he never read aloud.(St. Augustine, The Confessions, c. 397-400) Whether Augustine was impressed or appalled by the bishops reading habits remains a matter of scholarly dispute. Whats clear is that earlier in our history silent reading was considered a rare achievement. In our time, even the phrase silent reading must strike many adults as odd, even redundant. After all, silently is the way most of us have been reading since the age of five or six. Nevertheless, in the comfort of our own homes, cubicles, and classrooms, there are both pleasures and benefits in reading aloud. Two particular advantages come to mind. Benefits of Reading Aloud Read Aloud to Revise Your Own ProseReading a draft aloud may enable us to hear problems (of tone, emphasis, syntax) that our eyes alone might not detect. The trouble may lie in a sentence that gets twisted on our tongue or in a single word that rings a false note. As Isaac Asimov once said, Either it sounds right or it doesnt sound right. So if we find ourselves stumbling over a passage, its likely that our readers will be similarly distracted or confused. Time then to recast the sentence or seek a more appropriate word.Read Aloud to Savor the Prose of Great WritersIn his superb book Analyzing Prose (Continuum, 2003), rhetorician Richard Lanham advocates reading good prose out loud as a daily practice to counter the bureaucratic, unvoiced, asocial official style that anesthetizes so many of us in the workplace. The distinctive voices of great writers invite us to listen as well as to read. When young writers ask for advice on how to develop their own distinctive voices, we usually say, Keep reading, keep writing, and keep listening. To do all three effectively, it certainly helps to read out loud.

Men should be allowed to have more than one wife. Agree or disagree Essay
Men should be allowed to have more than one wife. Agree or disagree - Essay Example The main reason why men prefer polygamy is mainly due to greater wealth and resources than any other in the society. Cultural acts influenced polygamy where it outnumbers the monogamous ones by quite a large number. There is a behavior commonly practiced in the western countries where by men divorce and later remarry. This is termed as a serial polygamy. Many anthropologists refer that habit as monogamy because no one gets married to more than one woman at once. In this essay, I will disagree with polygamous marriage, which could either be a married man having an affair with several women, or officially marrying several women. Polygamous family has many negative effects as compared to the monogamous family. First, it consumes a lot of the familyââ¬â¢s money or wealth to cater for their daily needs of the large number of wives and children. The daily upkeep of women and children is more expensive. Polygamy leads to the man having many children in a short period. Again, clashes duri ng the distribution of wealth especially when the head of the family dies increase. Distribution of wealth brings forward chaos and may lead to death to some members of the family. Problems come forward, war takes its course between the wives and even the children, and usually the last married wives face problems in distribution. When the man dies before educating all his children, it may lead to some of the children involved in crimes and drug abuse in order to sustain their living. On the side of monogamous family, there is no problem because the family is small and manageable and there is a written will showing the wealth distribution (Zeitzen, 2008). In a monogamous family, it is hard for one to get a sexually transmitted disease outside wedlock, caused by either one of them. Many monogamous families are stable because they can cope with their daily life. On the other hand, due to the cause of not satisfied fully, one may go outside the wedlock and infected and the disease can w ipe them all. Polygamy is an outdated way of living leading to women die of childbirth and children die of diseases. Again, in polygamous families, jealousy is a problem and they do not mingle outside their families. Monogamous family utilizes the minimal wealth for the family needs where the expenses are minimal (Anonymous, 2004). Polygamy is an act, passed on by time, and people should try to avoid it because it has many effects to the society. If a man goes contrary to the wishes of one wife, or they disagree on a certain issue, the wife may react abnormally hence causing damages. Again, it has led to young children getting married when they are young. A person may be five times older than one of his wives. This in most cases is perceived as an act of exploitation. Those who are in abject poverty commonly practice this habit (Milton, 2009). Parents should look forward, open their eyes, and avoid this in the future and educate their own children. In addition, the rich exploit the poor by grabbing their piece of land and because of money the poor lacks justice. Further, I do support monogamous family because whenever an issue arises, both of them can sit down and solve the issue in the right way. In addition, they practice family planning and produce fewer children whom they can take care of well and in the right way. Most monogamous famili
